Spring Florals to Brighten Your Day

Nothing like flowers to brighten your mood. I find flowers, whether from my garden or the grocery store, to be powerful pick me ups. We can probably all use a bit of that power these days.

For enhanced pick me up power I have teamed up with Lidy, Mary & Pam as a guest in their Monday Morning Blooms blog event. I am honored & delighted to be sharing flower power with these creative ladies.

I thought I would share 5 tips for creating a beautiful, long lasting floral design. Lidy, Mary & Pam are sharing not only florals, but spring tablescapes too. My table is currently covered in school books & computers!

5 Tips for Creating Floral Designs

  • Choose a container that supports, enhances the look & feel of the ultimate design. The container is as much a part of the overall look as the flowers. Experiment with out of the ordinary containers, such a decorative tins, cans, teacups and more. If a unique container is not water tight, slip a jar inside to hold the water.

  • Use flower food. Bottom line is that it really does extend the life of your arrangement. See the brand I use HERE.

  • Use floral shears to make an angled cut. There are a few flowers that benefit from a straight cut, but the bulk of flowers last longer with an angled cut. This exposes more of the xylem ( inner stem ) to the water allowing for more water to get to the flower and prevents the stem from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase impeding water absorption. Click HERE for the floral shears that I use.

  • Begin your design with stems that will support the structure of the design. This may be greens, as it is in my design, or if greens are not part of your arrangement start with the strongest stemmed flowers.

  • Give depth to any design, whether single flower or a mixed bouquet by varying the lengths of the stems a bit and allowing some blooms to be recessed & others more prominent. This technique gives a lot of life & ‘movement’ to your design.
