Fresh flowers in the house is a must for me all year round, but especially during the holiday season.

I use a formula to create beautiful floral designs big or small.  This makes arranging flowers fast & fool proof.  No doubt you want both during this busy time of the year.

Let's go thru the simple floral formula together so you can create stunning arrangements in under 10 minutes.  Knowing the correct order & using the best tools will turn you into a pro.

I analogize to a play when explaining the formula to beautiful floral design.

Keeping the analogy in mind helps to keep the steps in order in your head while you are choosing & then arranging the flowers ~ and while 1,000 other thoughts are 'dancing in your head'!

Think of the parts of your arrangement as the elements of a play:

There is the theater ~ the greens.

The supporting actors ~ the medium sized flowers.

The lead actors ~ the 'wow' flowers.

...and the chorus ~ the fill.

The greens are the theater as they give your arrangement structure.

Medium sized blooms support the production and are vital, but not as flashy as the 'wow' flowers.

"Wow" flowers are the stars.

The chorus rounds out the production by filling in holes, softening the edges and making the other flowers look better.

So now you get the analogy, let's talk set up & tools.

Flowers just home from the market or hastily cut from the garden need a fresh angled cut (some flowers are better with a flat cut, but those are few).  Use the right tool to make this cut and your arrangement will last much longer.

These floral shears are my tool of choice. See them HERE.

All cut flowers need constant hydration so get them into water, give a fresh cut and put them back in water immediately.

The water in your vase should be treated with floral preservative.

Often little packets come with bought bouquets.  I suggest getting a container of floral preservative & keeping it under your sink so you always have it on hand. Get a container HERE.

The preservative does wonders to keep the flowers hydrated, hence lovely longer.

Place fresh cut flowers in a working container of water with the vase you are going to display them in filled with water treated with floral preservative.

Don't leave the flowers laying on the counter as you arrange.  Use your working container to hold them as you design.  Hydration is key!

Four Steps to an Easy Holiday Floral Arrangement

Ok, we are set up & ready to arrange.  Let's go step by simple step.

  • build your theater with the greens.  Make it sturdy with crossed stems in the vase to support the flowers.
  • Tuck in your supporting actors, the medium sized flowers
  • Add in the diva wow flowers
  • Tuck in the chorus here & there ~ berries, small flowers, seeded branches etc.
